Recipe for Making Pad Thai, Popular Thai Food

Pad Thai is one of the popular dishes from Thailand that you must try. This street food at a glance is similar to fried kwetiau, but the taste is very unique. No need to bother going to Thailand to taste this popular street food, with simple, easy-to-find ingredients. Here's a recipe for making your own Pad Thai at home!

For readers from Indonesia, this recipe is a must try, because I have tasted it when I visited Thailand, and it is suitable for the appetite of Indonesians who both like sour and spicy soup. The ingredients are easy to find in Indonesia!

Last September, I had the opportunity to visit Thailand for 3 days for a culinary cruise. I really enjoy using it because Thailand is one of the countries I want to visit.

So during our culinary tour, we tried various types of Thai food. There is Som Tham, a Thai papaya salad that tastes fresh and spicy, Tom Yum which is also fresh and spicy with the aroma of Thai spices such as lemongrass, lime leaves and coriander leaves.

Tom Yum itself has many variants, there are Tom Yum Goong (with shrimp), Tom Yum Pla (fish), Tom Yum Thaley (a mixture of various types of seafood).

At that time we also tasted Pad Thai, too bad the photo was lost. Until finally I made my own version of Pad Thai at my home in Indonesia. Pad Thai uses noodles made from rice, in Indonesia it is usually replaced with kwei tiau.

Be careful when choosing Kwei Tiau, because there are 2 types on the market. There is also mixed with sago. According to the seller, what I bought was made from real rice, it also tastes better.

Pad Thai in Thailand is enjoyed with raw vegetables. So there is a sprinkling of bean sprouts, scallions and a banana heart. After that sprinkled with roasted peanuts pounded with a little sugar and salt.

Want to know how to make it? This is my recipe for padthai style, which I made as closely as possible to the one I ate in Bangkok in September 2021.

Main Ingredients to Make Pad Thai:

- 300 gr or 1 pack of dry kwei tiau

- 200 gr peeled prawns, if you are allergic to seafood, you can skip this one, ladies.

- 100 gr chicken, cut into small pieces.

- 200 gr bean sprouts that have been cleaned.

- 4 cloves garlic

- 4 cloves of red onion

- 2 spring onions, finely sliced

- 3 tablespoons tamarind water

- 2 tbsp sugar

- 5 tbsp soy sauce

- enough oil

Complementary Ingredients for Making Pad Thai:

- 1 lime, cut into 4 parts

- 2 eggs

- Peanuts that have been fried and ground, if you don't like peanuts, you can skip this one ingredient, Ladies.

- 5 pieces of red cayenne pepper, the number of chilies depends on your taste.

How to Cook Pad Thai:

1. Boil noodles in boiling water for about 3 minutes. When the texture of the noodles is a little mushy, remove and drain. then mix with 1 tbsp oil.

2. Puree the ingredients such as garlic, shallots, red cayenne pepper, and salt to taste using a blender.

3. Heat the oil, fry the ingredients that you have blended until fragrant.

4. Enter the shrimp and chicken that you have cut into pieces, then stir-fry until it changes color and is cooked.

5. Add tamarind water, sugar, soy sauce, scallions, and eggs. Then stir so that the eggs are scrambled.

6. Enter the noodles and bean sprouts, mix well. Cook until the spices are absorbed and mixed perfectly. Once mixed well, remove and serve.

7. Add a sprinkling of ground peanuts (if you like peanuts) and a squeeze of lime to make it more appetizing.

You can enjoy Pad Thai, Ladies.

If this is my mainstay every time there are guests at home. Thai Milk Tea! The tea has to be bought in Thailand, the aroma is unique and the color is also darker and more orange than other teas. Actually there is an instant version, but I think it tastes better than the one I usually buy.

Making it is also very easy, the tea is brewed with boiling water, mixed with sugar, then poured with milk. Just add ice and it's done! Almost all friends and family who try this milk tea really like it.

If you want to be practical, you can also use sweetened condensed milk, so you don't need to add sugar anymore. Instead of buying it at the mall, the price is quite expensive, it's better to make your own at home. It's very satisfying to be able to drink glasses, hehehhe.

Besides these two menus, mango sticky rice is also my favorite Thai dessert, I've never uploaded a photo or recipe on this blog, but I've tried it. Next I want to make Tom Yum Goong which if possible is as good as the one I've eaten at Pe' Aor. It has to be trial and error until it meets expectations. Anyway, when it comes to Thai cuisine, it's great, it's fun and delicious! .
